The calculation of the intraocular lens is a central step in planning cataract surgery. Although modern biometric devices allow measurement of the eye at a very high level of precision, the actual lens calculation remains challenging. Anatomical differences, individual healing responses and biological variability mean that, despite optimal planning, an exact “zero-dioptre” outcome with perfect unaided distance vision cannot be achieved in every patient.
Prof. Findl has spent many years optimising intraocular lens power calculation. His research on biometry, prediction accuracy and calculation models is documented in numerous scientific publications. Among other work, he played a major role in the development of the ESCRS Calculator, which allows efficient comparison of modern and established lens formulas and further improves individualised lens calculation.
