Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgical procedure worldwide. Because of the large case numbers, substantial amounts of disposable material and waste are generated, resulting in a relevant carbon footprint.
Prof. Findl initiated the ESCRS Mission Zero programme aiming to make ophthalmology workflows progressively low-waste and climate-conscious.
He also contributed significantly to developing SIDICS (Sustainability Index for Disposables in Cataract Surgery), allowing objective comparison of environmental impact of surgical materials.
He co-founded the global initiative EyeSustain and initiated the Young Ophthalmologists for Sustainability Group (YOFS).
Prof. Findl has published numerous scientific studies on CO₂ footprint measurement and waste reduction in cataract surgery. Sustainability is seen as an evolution of medical quality and responsibility.
